Sunday Pilot Pottery by diana

Because of the nature of clay and glaze, no two pieces of hand thrown pottery will ever be alike. Each piece is individually designed, lovingly crafted and signed by the artist - that would be me. So, let me introduce myself. My name is Diana Spiller. I grew up in New Hampshire, went to art school, got married, raised two wonderful children, managed my husband's business, became a licensed private pilot (just for thrill of it). But, something was missing... Being a potter was always a dream of mine... sitting in a log cabin in the woods... making pots. But "real life" intervened and although at one time I did live in a log cabin in the woods, I never did make any pots there. I spent the first 25 years of my married life doing any and all sorts of arts and crafts, until finally, the old dream of being a potter crept back into my subconscious. I began taking evening classes at an excellent local arts center. After several years I decided that I was ready to branch out with my own ideas and designs. My first "original" was a Mouse Bowl set, done for my daughter's cat while I was still taking classes. Perched on the rim of one bowl is an inquisitive mouse, readying himself to crawl into the companion bowl which contains a wedge of Swiss cheese. Much to my delight, the bowls charmed everyone who saw them, and they continue to be very popular with my customers. My Mouse Bowl "set" occasionally becomes one larger bowl, with both the mouse and the cheese somewhere in close proximity. This poor fellow looks more interested in escaping the possibility of being covered in cheese dip than in eating the wedge of Swiss that I left for him. I now do many different types of pottery because I like to try new materials and ideas. I work mostly in stoneware. I do both slab and hand thrown pieces and I make all my own glazes. Because I have an art background I love to design Maiolica pieces, wall tiles and coasters , which partially fulfills my need to "decorate everything". I also make wind chimes, whistles, tea bowls, boxes and marbles. The tiles and an occasional flower pot or "mini" are the only things I do not personally make from raw clay. Apples, grapes, leaves, flowers, footprints and geometrics are some of my recurring themes. My pieces are microwave and dishwasher safe, however they are not meant for oven or stovetop use. *** All my glazes are LEAD FREE.***
